Low Ki vs. Necro Butcher, IWA:MS We’re No Joke, 4/1/06

I watched the rematch they have later in the year just this past weekend. I wasn’t blown away by it. It was certainly good, just not on the level of what I was expecting. Then I had this match pointed out to me.

And THIS was what I was expecting!

To start, after Necro makes his entrance, Ki sneaks in from crowd to blindside Necro and then they brawl through a TON of streamers that get thrown in a funny scene. Ki then DOMINATES the first 10-11 mins of this after catching Necro off guard, but he’s barely getting two counts on his pin attempts, so Necro’s still fully in this the whole way. The wrestling equivalent of your favorite team playing like shit but someone only being down by 7 with a whole quarter and a half left to play. Go Birds.

I loved this spot; Ki pinned Butcher, but Butcher rolled 3/4s the way on his hip because Ki didn’t hook the leg, and the ref started to count the three until Necro yelled and pointed it out since the ref was out of position. A little convoluted since you’d think Necro would just kick out, but I kinda love it if you’re viewing wrestling as a legitimate athletic contest (which admittedly, you’re not doing very often in a Necro match, I get it). Because maybe he didn’t have it in him to kick out but he had enough of his wits about him in a daze to point this out.

The main story of the match is a table being set up in the ring and there just being a TON of near miss collisions with it, building up to a fun table spot I’m sure, including with teases like this:

Necro finally gains control when he catches Ki on a springboard back elbow by taking his head off with a lariat. Now we get to the CHAIR WORK~  that Necro is famous for, and he is punishing Ki out on the floor and around the ring.

Ki again creatively avoids the table back in the ring by swinging out of a Death Valley Driver set up into half of a dragon clutch, just hanging off of Necro’s back, leading to Necro putting Ki on the ropes to break it, and then Ki acting quick by hitting the double stomp across Necro’s back as he was resting on the middle rope!

ANOTHER table battle where both men go up top to fight. Necro tries a tiger bomb through the table, but Ki starts wildly throwing punches and chops to Necro’s head and neck til he’s woozy enough to teeter and…

GOD DAMN.

But Necro STILL kicks out! Ki looks shocked, and doubt is showing, which is RARE for him. Sold the disbelief so well But he recoups and acts quick, locking on the dragon clutch for almost a minute and Bryce finally calls it because Necro passed out!

This was way better than their second match which I watched last weekend. Some people have this even with the Necro/Joe I, a few even have it slightly ahead. It doesn’t do for me what Necro/Joe I does. The first time I saw that match it was like I was watching pro wrestling for the very first time. It was truly the rare non Big 4 (WWE/WCW/ECW/AEW) match that I will remember where I was and what I was doing when I watched it. But I don’t want that to diminish how great this was. So I’m going to rank it even, star wise, with Necro/Joe I because they simply both kick ass and scratch two different kinds of itches for me but I will always give the slight nod to Joe/Necro I.

MATCH RATING: ****
