Samoa Joe vs. Necro Butcher - IWA:MS Something to Prove, 6/11/2005

(Hey gang. Back in 2020, in the months before COVID, I started a site similar to this and reviewed some stuff. I recently remembered it and decided to move those reviews over here. Hopefully you'll enjoy and they can reach a larger audience. Or not. Whatever. But this was my brain before the pandemic broke it. Or fixed it? I dunno.)

Let me get this out of the way before we start. Fuck Necro Butcher and everything he believes in. He’s a piece of shit, and I mean that. It's the major downfall of enjoying wrestling -- especially reviewing old wrestling -- that there's so many truly awful people spread throughout it's history.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s watch these two FUCK shit up in the ECW Arena. Prazak, Punk and Eddie Kingston on the call. This is going to be a delight.

I know this match has been reviewed to death. But as you can tell from my reviews, I’m trying to stick with shit that I’ve simply never seen, and this is something I’ve always wanted to watch. 

FUCK YEAH.

Crowd is super hot. Joe with an early enziguri off the ropes sequence with a tope to follow up, AS RAW ROLLS ON~

We’re less than a minute in and they’re already brawling in the crowd. Necro headbutts Joe and busts himself open which is fantastic. Necro becomes enraged and forces Joe into a seat and just starts throwing chairs at him repeatedly.

Necro takes a charge as the brawl continues.

JESUS. Completely shorted the power slam and it ended up being an accidental brainbuster of sorts. This is probably the moment Necro went Alt Right.

Joe sets Necro up in a chair now and hits a Helluva Kick. He wipes Necro’s blood off of himself as Necro starts to fight back, but Joe whacks him with a knee lift and throws him over the barrier back to ringside.

Oh. Oh my.

Joe goes for a pin in the ring for a 2. Necro makes a comeback, booting Joe to the floor. Necros in control after tossing Joe into the guard rail.

Prazak comments that Ian Rotten browses the internet wrestling community’s fantasy booker sections and that’s how he came up with this. Punk says he was probably just high as a kite.

It was probably both.

Necro bring a whole section of guard rail into the ring and just throws it at Joe, and then on Joe, and then sentons himself on top of it while it’s on Joe. The brawl to the apron and start exchanging punches and GOD DAMN.

JESUS CHRIST. There is blood EVERYWHERE.

AND NOW A STIFF CHAIR SHOT TO THE HEAD TO FOLLOW UP MY GOD.

Back in the ring, Joe’s got this sick satisfaction on his face. He sets the guard rail up across the middle ropes in one corner and POWERBOMBS NECRO WITH THE BACK OF HIS HEAD CLIPPING THE RAIL.

Joe puts his foot on Necro in the conquering pose, BUT NECRO KICKS OUT AT 2!

Joe calls for the chair from the floor, sets it up, AND NOW A SNAP GERMAN SUPLEX HEAD FIRST INTO THE CHAIR! But that only gets ANOTHER TWO COUNT!

Joe is beyond frustrated and gets Necro up to start paintbrushing him in the corner. Necro fights back though and this crowd is EATING IT UP. Joe absorbs and blocks all of Necro’s shots, AND THEN GOES ON THE BEST TEAR OF STRIKES I’VE SEEN IN A LONG LONG TIME!

 

Necro is bleeding profusely, it actually made my stomach turn. He goes to get up, and as he’s keeled over, Joe connects with a VICIOUS side kick to the head. Necro is down and it doesn’t look good. Bryce Remsburg starts the count, Necro’s trying everything to get back to his feet and Joe just stands in the corner.

Necro gets to the ropes and starts to pull himself up right around 9, but collapses before he can fully stand as you see above, and Remsburg counts 10, and signals for the bell.

Joe celebrates, but Necro regains consciousness after a minute or so and goes after Joe, punching away. Security breaks it up as Joe heads to the back. Necro is pissed and yelling at Remsburg for calling the match.

Ian Rotten, my spiritual kin, comes out and thanks everyone for attending IWA:MS’s first show in Philadelphia. This is apparently a double card with a CZW show coming on in a bit, which in this era, sounds like a fucking blast. He says IWA:MS will book the Joe/Necro rematch. No idea if this ever happened.

They then pretty much replay the entire match, some parts of it twice.

I could’ve watched this for another 10 minutes. I did feel a bit robbed when I realized it was the end. I was for sure thinking Ian was coming out to restart the match. But in retrospect, they did so much insane, great shit in a short amount of time that I don’t think there was much else they could do before it started to become borderline unbelievable. Awesome visuals, down right gory at points, and being in the ECW Arena made this even cooler to me, as a mutant.
